Let me introduce myself
I am Ilaria Sclafani, and working as a translator is my calling. I translate from English and French into Italian (my native language).
Foreign languages have always been one of my passions. I remember that, at the age of four, I already knew the meaning of a few sentences in English (e.g. “How are you?”, “What’s the time?”), and how to count from one to ten. I wasn’t raised in a bilingual family, nor did I attend an English course in kindergarten, but my Dad taught me something that he had learned at school. A few years later, I got into music in English and Spanish (e.g. the Spice Girls, Ricky Martin… yes, it was in the 90s!) and, in middle school, I attended French and English classes for the first time.
I attended a university course in Translation and Interpreting (Mediazione linguistica e comunicazione interculturale) at the G. D’Annunzio University of Chieti-Pescara. In 2009, a month before graduation (my thesis was on TV interpreting, and it included the translation of two conference papers from English into Italian), I started my translation blog, Learning by Translating, which was hosted on WordPress.com. I chose that name because I was (and still am) a firm believer in the fact that, through translation, you can learn something new and expand your knowledge. A few months later, I registered the domain www.ilaria-translations.com because I wanted a more professional-sounding website name. My website hasn’t always had the same name and domain (for example, I used to own www.mylifeintranslation.net), but I eventually chose Ilaria Translations once again in 2014.
In 2018 I obtained a Master’s Degree in Foreign Languages for Business and International Cooperation (Laurea Magistrale in Lingue straniere per l’impresa e la cooperazione internazionale). This time, my thesis was about the translation, from French into Italian, of eight chapters of the novel La traduction est une histoire d’amour (also available in English as Translation Is a Love Affair – translated by Sheila Fischman) by the French Canadian author Jacques Poulin.
